The Railway Lands Project was a joint effort between UrbanArts, Community Arts Council, and The Mount Dennis Community Association.
As head of UrbanArts’ Graffiti Transformation Project Denis approached the Community Association, and asked for ideas of where they might like some community art.
The Community Association delivered five boards, and complete artistic freedom to UrbanArts.
Each of the five boards were assigned two different elements and principles of design. The six youth artists then found creative ways to express these.
Narrow top boards were a later addition. The mural artists asked S.T.E.P.U.P., a poetry collective run at UrbanArts, to express what they saw in the local
community in short poems. These were later painted onto the narrow top boards.
The boards were installed by members of the local community, who also planted gardens at the foot of each one.
The unveiling of the murals attracted a huge crowd and the Mayor of Toronto, David Miller.
